FLOWER MAIL

The air punctuated with the flaming colors of a myriad of flowers, from roses, tulips to lilies. Under the sunlight, the edges of the petals tinted gold. They flickered in the light—sometimes with a white hue washed over it and other times, exploding in distinct colors—oscillating between visible and translucent. The blossoms of flowers rained down from the ceiling like showers of jewels: sapphire, ruby, amethyst and more. Floating in the air, they flew into the dining hall from the open windows and door. Mia glanced at the lancet window behind Colt who sat across the table from her. The glimpse from the tall skinny window with pointed arch at the top revealed dozens of these ghastly flowers floating towards the school from far away. But there was another bunch of flowers blooming from the ground, among the snowy white asphodel flowers. Growing beautifully from seed to sprout to full bloom in the blink of an eye. Then, they took off. Drifting up into the golden sky like kites whose strings got cut. They glowed bright against the rising sun. In a dazzling glow of shimmering gold sparks. These glowing flowers interweaved in a beautiful dance in the air with the other ghastly flowers. Spinning around in circles. Stalks swaying. Leaves fluttering. Petals bobbing.

Two of those ghastly flowers pranced before Mia. In vivid swirls of white. Daisies. Her forehead wrinkled into a frown as she observed them. Two more daisies then joined the dance, prancing before Colt. His hands reached out to grab the stalk of the flowers without hesitation. He held one in his right hand, nodding his head every now and then before seizing the other one in his left hand. A minute ticked by and a faint smile hovered on his lips. Curiosity swelled within Mia. And her hand darted forward to grasp the flower, her fingers curling around the smooth green stalk.

Mia, how have you been?

A voice rang in her ears. The weak echo of the feeble voice was unmistakable. Adeline!

It has only been a week since you joined Asphodelus. And we’re already missing you. I really wish we could have done some cooking, knitting or gardening together before you’d left for school. But all this can wait until the one-week break when school term ends. So for now, just concentrate on your studies. I do hope all is well with you. And that Colt is taking good care of you.

Tears glazed her eyes as Mia grasped the other flower. This time, Henry’s voice filled her ears.

So how’s school so far, Mia? It must be fun and exciting to learn so many new things. But it’s not just work hard and play hard, remember to also eat well and sleep well. We want our lovely granddaughter to return home safe and sound. Remember, we’ll always be here for you. See you in two months!

Mia sniffed, choking back the rising sob in her throat. Her lips quivered and her hands fell onto the table. The ghastly flowers trembled in her hands.
